Spoken Word Artist. Burlesque Performer. Photographer. Model.
Mel Vee is a queer Black (out)spoken word artist, model, burlesque performer and photographer who was born and raised in Mohkinstsis, colonially known as Calgary. The prairies are her great love, but the prairies have never loved her. Smashing misconceptions along the way, her artistic practice centers on cultivating unflinching insights into her experiences of race, gender, sexuality and class. Having struggled for years to find her voice, Mel Vee is dedicated to empowering marginalized folks tell our own stories from our own perspectives; the stories we didn’t have when we needed them. She is communications coordinator and a co-founding member of Uproot YYC, Calgary’s premier collective by and for Artists of Colour. Her greatest aspiration is to become a mom to a dachshund baby someday.
