Mel Vee is a Black (out)spoken word artist, model, writer, facilitator and budding photographer who was born and raised in Mokinstis (Calgary) on Treaty 7 land. The prairies are her great love, but the prairies have never loved her. Straddling the bounds of multiple marginalized identities and shattering conceptions along the way, her piercing insights into race, gender, class and sexuality form the core of her artistic practice. Her chosen medium, spoken word poetry, is an art form rooted in the power of voice to reclaim silenced and marginalized narratives. Mel Vee tells the stories she didn’t have when she needed them and her only true wish is to have a dachshund some day.
